I played my first league match/game/round/whatever on Wednesday. We were rained out last week but the weather gods granted us a beautiful day this week. Sadly my game was kinda ugly. For some reason I kept getting under the ball too much and hitting popups. The only good thing was that I was hitting pretty straight. In the end my scores ranged from bogey to quadruple bogey (ick!). I hope to get to the range before my next round.

I was also impressed by the special treatment we got at the course. Other people were told to let us play through because we were with a league. We did get stuck behind 3 frat boys who had no idea what they were doing. And all in all, I think we caught up to the men in front of us 3 times (in a 9 hole league). So who’s the slow ones now?
Next time I play I need to remember to wear pants. The course is in a bit of a swampy area and despite wearing bug spray, I was covered in bites.
I know I have mentioned this before but if you are ever in Dicks Sporting Goods make sure you check out their clearance racks.
I was in there the other day to buy some sneakers and I found some great stuff. I ended up picking up these grey/red plaid Slazenger Moreland Bermuda shorts.
They were marked down to $23 from $50. Good deal!
Then I went to check out and found out that clearance items were 50% off. $11.50 – Score!

Saturday was the nicer day of this past weekend so I definitely wanted to hit the driving range. It took barely any convincing to get my sister, who I was down the shore spending the day with, to agree to go hit some balls. This is why I leave my clubs in my car.

We headed over to the Twin Brook Golf Center, which despite the state of their sign, was a nice place. They even have a bar! There’s a nice mini golf course as well as a pitch and put. Their range is 2 floors with benches and such but it’s wide open so noise and privacy could be an issue. Anyway when we went to go get our balls, we saw a sign saying that they had replaced all the range balls that day. So we got to play with new balls!
My hitting was terrible and I totally blame it on the new balls. On a side note the upstairs has a bit of an overhang so you are only supposed to use 6 iron and down up there. That was a little annoying.
Gap-owned women’s athletic brand Athleta has a range of clothing the call their golf line. Athleta was where I was finally able to find the Ecco Street Premieres in my size last year. They make a variety of skorts and shorts that would be suitable for golf, in addition to the pieces they call golfwear. Looking through their catalog, I’d probably be more inclined to wear the non-golf stuff but their golf line is still better than a lot of the mainstream golfwear collections.
Here are some images from Athleta’s golf lookbook.

I like the green top and the black skirts on the left and right looks, but I hate that flippy printed skirt in the middle look.

Athleta Short Sleeve Mulliagan Tee - $49
I really like the Mulligan Tee, which comes in 4 colors and costs $49, at least from the waist up. It’s got cool seaming, a hidden pocket, and technical fabric. What I don’t like is the elastic waistband and the “scalloped skirt”. It just doesn’t seem that attractive to me and I can just imagine having to constantly pull it down. It also comes in a sleeveless version for $44.

Athleta Swagger Skort - $49
The Swagger Skort ($49) isn’t in the golf section but I think this would look great with a simple polo shirt. The ruffles lay flat so I think it would be flattering on most body types – plus there is only one ruffle in the back! I’m probably going to pick this up in black.
The other piece I like are the Pivot Pants (shown in the left lookbook photo above) which are a cotton/spandex blend and cost $79. They convert to capri pants – good for playing in muddy conditions! The pants come in four colors including and olive and a sky blue that you don’t see often in pants, especially for golf. Plus reading the reviews women who have purchased the Pivot Pants seem to really like them for golf.
Today was a nice, sunny sorta warm day so I headed to the driving range. I think this is the first time I’ve touched my clubs since September. My league starts in a month so I better get swinging!
I got a medium bucket of balls for $9. My local driving range recently changed hands. I think the prices are the same but I didn’t get an EWGA discount which was normally a large bucket for $10.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well I hit my irons. Good distance and straight. My hybrids were decent but once again I couldn’t hit my driver straight. At the end I got it going mostly straight by loosening up my grip a lot and trying to swing very softly. Gotta work on that.

One of the guys that worked there stopped in my booth to chat with me. He said I had a really nice swing.
Is that golf flirting?
I’ll occasionally be posting so polls because I think it’s interesting to see what people do or think about golf.
My first question is a common one – do you prefer to walk or drive on the course. I’ll even go so far as to have you assume that walking and driving are the same price for this poll.
I’ll be honest – I am definitely a walker. Part of the reason I play golf is for fitness and being outdoors both of which I feel are better accomplished with two feet.

I have to figure out what golf league I’m going to play in by tomorrow. It’s become a bit convoluted. There is a league at a course a mile from my house, but due to the layout you feel as if you need to play wearing body armor as balls fly in from different holes. No thanks.
The one I’d normally pick is a county course that’s about 15 minutes from my house. However as a county resident I’d normally only pay $13/14 for the 9hole after 5pm round, but the league charges a full non-resident rate which is over $20. I think I’d feel like I was getting ripped off every time I played.
So I think it’s down to whether I want to play a smaller league 8-12 players at course I’ve played a few times or step up to the General/Intermediate league that has 20 players at a large county course. I gotta meet up with my golf buddy and see which league she wants to do.
Someone was recently told me about Tip Tee Toe golf shoes – describing them as “high heeled golf shoes”. This I had to see.

Now I definitely wouldn’t call these high heels. Maybe a stacked heel or a wedge. As golf shoes go they aren’t too bad, but as for wearing them off the course? No way. Maybe I’m not the target consumer for these shoes but I would never wear that style.
I also heard from the person who had a pair that they weren’t comfortable enough for walking the course, so she could only wear them when she got a cart.
They retail for $149 and come in several bright colors as well as white.
I was at a brunch for my EWGA chapter on sunday. Along with lots of raffles and such they gave everyone a “bingo” card where the boxes were labeled with categories like “knows what EWGA means”, “new member”, “100 handicap”, and “Under 40″. My friend and I, who are both in our early 30′s, quickly became very popular. The event had around 150 people attending and I have to think there were less than 10 women under age 40.
That got me thinking about why we don’t do more to attract younger women. I attend very few events because, while everyone is very nice they are definitely not my normal social group and other than golf we have very few common interests. As was pointed out during one of the speeches, women decide within the first minute of arriving at an event whether they are going to like it. My first experience with EWGA was a beginner golf class where most of the women were my age, but had I attended this event I don’t think I would have come back.
So some ideas for attrracting younger members:
- 35 & under leagues
- recruit college & young professionals
- events targeted more at younger women
- more fun social events
Cuz I’m young, and I’m hip. So beautiful. I’m gonna be a supermodel.
Or just a golf model. I got asked to take part in a golf fashion show that’s part of my EWGA chapter’s Tee Off Brunch. Last night all the models headed to Golf Galaxy to pick out 2 outfits. I decided going in there I wanted some crazy stuff…and I think I found it.
I didn’t think to take photos while I was trying stuff on so for now I just have photos of the clothes. Hopefully i will get some photos at the event.
Here are the outfits (with apologies for the crappy photos):
